Food Garden

The community garden programme for 2024 has now ended!

A new programme for 2025 starts in February.

Full details to follow!

Community Garden Programme started 29 November!

In partnership with This is Nelson and The Good Life Project, we’re pleased to announce the launch of our first, and FREE, community garden programme.

The programme is part of work across Nelson to explore what a sustainable food strategy might look like and connect communities interested in growing and food gardening.  Each session takes place at Hodge House Community Garden on a Wednesday at 10.00am (or inside Hodge House Community Centre if the weather isn’t great) and will cover the practical aspects of what to plant and when as well as craft workshops.

The sessions are open to everyone interested in growing your own fresh produce, meeting new friends and getting some fresh air and exercise too.  The full programme is shown below:

Please note: workshop materials will be supplied free of charge but you must book your attendance in advance.  Instructions on how to do this will be posted prior to each workshop here on our website and on our Facebook pages BBL Community Land Trust and Hodge House Community Centre.

Session 1 – Wednesday, 29 November: planning the garden

Session 2 – Wednesday, 13 December: wreath making workshop

Session 3 – Wednesday, 17January: winter vegetable soup making workshop

Session 4 – Wednesday, 24 January: planting schemes & design feedback

Session 5 – Wednesday, 7 February: how to make herbal lip balm/hand cream workshop

Session 6 – Wednesday, 21 February: organise our planting season, prepare space for seedlings

Session 7 – Wednesday, 6 March: planting

Session 8 – Wednesday, 20 March: preparing the garden

The ‘Pocket Park’ opposite the community centre has been renamed Hodge House Community Garden.

Thanks to grant funding from The National Lottery ‘Together for our Planet’ Fund, we’ve been able to clear the area, reinstate the damaged polytunnel and put up a posh shed to provide shelter (when it rains!).

We’re now in touch with other groups like the Good Life Project, InSitu and the Females Friendship Forum who all want to visit the garden on a regular basis and host open access sessions for anyone interested in gardening.  The focus will be on growing fruit and vegetables enabling participants to enjoy the results of their hard work, save money and save food miles.

If you’re interested in getting involved – maybe you have some time occasionally to help with the ongoing maintenance of the garden – then please drop us a quick message on our contact form.  We’d love to hear from you.
